Each year we also take part in a scheme which helps to teach the children about growing and where our food comes from. We receive a box of 2 bags of different varieties of potatoes and during my Carpet Time, I explained and showed the children what we were going to do. I opened the bags and placed them in the holes on the cardboard box and explain about ‘chitting’ where we must wait for some shoots to start and grow. After a month we planted the potatoes outside. The children helped to fill the bags with compost and they each got a potato to be planted and then covered over. The potatoes were given a water, we will have a look after the Easter Holidays to see if they have started to show through the compost and if they have, we will cover them again.
